As the weather begins to get colder, please send your student to school with a coat, hat, gloves, etc. If there is snow, students should also have snow gear such as boots and snow pants to enjoy the snow during recess. We will go outside unless the Real Feel temperature is below 19 degrees.

We have plenty of items in our Lost & Found that are looking for their owners. We will have all items out in the LMC this week and during Parent/Teacher Conferences for families look through.

 

During your child’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) time in their class last month, all grades spent time celebrating Red Ribbon Week, which is a nation-wide pledge and celebration to be safe, healthy, and drug-free. During Second Step lessons, grade levels focused on topics the following topics:

• Kindergarten is learning about “size of the problem” - this is the concept that helps to categorize problems. “Small” problems can be fixed quickly and easily by kids, and “big” problems take longer and help from an adult. When kids think of problems in this way, it helps them to have an appropriate-sized response.

• 1st and 2nd grades learned about empathy and kindness. This includes how to be kind to others, ways to show and put empathy into action, and trying to see things from another person’s point of view.

• 3rd and 4th grades learned about how to growth mindset and goal-setting. These lessons help kids to see that making mistakes is a part of the learning process. Students then take part in setting a goal for themselves and planning out some steps to achieve it.

 

 

Safety is our number one priority at Glen Hill. For this reason, we need to limit the amount of people that are in our vestibule at one time. When coming to the school, please ring the bell and wait for one of our office staff members to let you into the building. If you are in the building, please do not open the door for visitors. Following this protocol will help to ensure the safety of everyone visiting the building.

With the winter season coming upon us, we are seeing an increase in students becoming sick. Across all grades, there has been an uptick in cases of influenza, RSV, and strep. As a reminder, please keep your students home if they are not feeling well. COVID tests are no longer required but are recommended. Home tests are a cheap and accessible method of determining if your child has COVID. Also, if your student's symptoms worsen, I recommend following up with your primary care provider for guidance. Please keep the front office updated with any diagnosis of illnesses and ask your doctor for a return to school note. If you're not healthy, you're not learning. Let's make sure our kids stay healthy so they can continue to learn and grow at Glen Hill!

The Dupage County Health Department Dental Program will be coming to our school on November 13th and 14th to do dental exams for all grade levels who return a completed signed consent form. This exam will meet state mandated requirements for kindergarteners and 2nd graders--so if you have yet to complete a dental exam form for your student, now is your chance! Also, if the child meets the necessary requirements they will receive a dental cleaning, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

 

Permission slips will be sent home with your student within the next few days. If you would like your student to participate, please complete the form and return it to the school as soon as possible.

It is important for all students to arrive on time and ready to learn every morning. In order to ensure students are safely in the building and ready to begin their day, we ask families to be here before the 8:15 bell rings. In the event that your student arrives later, we have procedures in place in make sure they get the information they need to start the day. Any students arriving after the 8:20 bell are officially tardy to school. Families MUST sign them in for the day. We have all students waiting until after our daily announcements to get to their classrooms. Thank you for your support in getting your students to school on time!

• Ms. Meg from the public library gave a presentation to K-3 about the Illinois Monarch Award nominees. This kicks off our efforts to read all twenty books and then vote on our favorite. I will be reading the books and doing related activities with the students in the library in addition to teachers reading the books to their classes. After hearing each book read aloud, students will fill out their Monarch Journal to rate the book and draw a picture or write about their favorite part of the book. Students will number the books after reading a set of five so they can keep up with which one is their favorite. Voting will be in March. Ms. Meg also talked to our third and fourth graders about this year's Bluestem Award: Illinois’ Grades 3-5 Readers’ Choice Award. These books are longer and more complex than the Monarch books and are just right for our older students.

  
  

  We will be kicking off a reading incentive in partnership with the Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed program! Students in grades K-1 will have a reading goal of 15 minutes and 2-4 will have a reading goal of 30 minutes per day for a total of ten days. When they reach their goal they will receive a free ticket to a Chicago Wolves game! Look for information that will be coming home next week.

Third & Fourth grade students are using their recorders!! Students in fourth grade will review notes B-A-G and the songs that were taught last year, along with new notes, rhythms, and songs. They will also learn new notes and songs. Third graders are learning how to play notes B-A-G and have a music symbol unit, so they can apply the symbols to reading & playing music. Recorders are kept at school until the end of the year. All grade levels will be blending musical concepts with songs of gratitude and the winter season.

 

Snowflake Show Information: Kindergarten, Second Graders, and Fourth Graders will perform the Snowflake Shows in the music classroom at Glen Hill School on December 19-21. The Snowflake Shows take place in the music room for an intimate & fun performance highlighting Fall & Winter Music. We also honor all veterans with a special song, too. Thank you to everyone who participated in the National Walk, Bike, and Roll to school day! I enjoyed seeing everyone stop by and enjoy a wonderful morning before school. The month of October for PE includes our unit for the most popular sport in the world, Soccer. This is followed by Football, and then we end with some (not so) spooky Halloween themed activities.

*Important Reminder*

As the weather changes, make sure your child still has a pair of gym shoes to wear for PE every day. If it is easier, they may leave them in their lockers to change into. All of our activities require foot support that Crocs and boots don’t provide.

In order to make sure our students are safe, please observe the following directions for dropping off and picking up your students. We know how valuable everyone's time is, but we also know keeping our students and staff safe is our priority.

 

• Wait your turn in the line and do not move out of the car line.
• Students should be let out of their cars curbside within the blue arrows.
• Right turn on Bloomingdale Road only-NO LEFT TURN during the school day.
• We discourage parking your car to drop off or pick your child, as it's a safety risk to your student.

 

If you choose to walk your student to school, we recommend parking along Glen Hill Drive and walking to the building. The picture below shows the ideal places to park.

When we have inclement weather, we do not want to send students outside to wait for their rides home. We will hold students in the building and call them out to the cars once a family arrives. If there is enough time, we will send out an email blast notifying families of the dismissal process as it occurs.

For walkers, please pick up your student at the back of the new gym. We will dismiss all walkers out the back door (Door 12)

Car riders will exit Door 13. Please do not stand close to Door 13, since that slows down our ability to safely get students from the building.
