Letter From the Superintendent
March 12, 2021
Dear Queen Bee 16 Families,
I hope that this message finds you healthy, safe, and enjoying the improved weather that we are beginning to experience. I would like to update you on some issues of significant importance and explain the impact that they may have on our efforts going forward. We have been pursuing the vaccination of our faculty and members of the community, and we have made significant progress in both areas. Additionally, we received some updated guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health earlier this week that has caused some confusion and frustration in the public school community. My hope is that this message updates you on our progress and also gives you credible insight into how we can and will respond to the updated guidance. I would also like to reiterate that we designed our instructional program for this year within the limits of all available guidance, with the possibility that vaccines might become available and that every family should have the opportunity to make an informed decision. I believe that we have done that, and it is our intention to adhere to our principles as we navigate our way through the challenges that we face as a community.
I am proud to report that Queen Bee 16 has led the way in ensuring that vaccine, when available, was administered to the members of our community and the educators of the Glenbard System. Working in partnership with our 6 neighboring school districts, the Village of Glendale Heights, the Glendale Heights Police Department, and the Glenside Fire Protection District, we have facilitated over 6,000 vaccinations, with the majority going to the members of our community who qualified in the 1b category. The success of our clinic led to additional allocations of vaccine for our community, and I anticipate having the opportunity to facilitate at least one more clinic. Approximately 75% of our employees have voluntarily vaccinated, and they will be fully vaccinated in the coming weeks. This is important because it significantly reduces, but does not eliminate, the possibility of ceasing our educational efforts in Remote or Hybrid due to the unavailability of teachers or staff. We are still employing all other mitigation strategies to virtually eliminate the possibility of COVID transmission in our schools.
Earlier this week the Illinois Department of Public Health updated the guidance for public schools, and the update contained some significant reversals of previous guidance and the softening of other previously required mitigation strategies. The most significant change in guidance was the reduction of the social distancing requirement from a minimum of 6 feet to a minimum of 3 feet. The reason for this reduction is attributed to the low incidence of student-to- student spread in schools that we have experienced across the state up to this date. The updated guidance also deemphasizes symptoms screening at school but maintains the recommendation for daily self-certification. I am currently working with our district-wide COVID Safety Team to thoroughly understand the changes in the guidance and to see how those changes may allow for an increase in class sizes and the number of In-person Instructional opportunities for our students. I have also initiated a review with our Architects at FGM to ensure that we implement any changes in a credible and safe manner that prioritizes student, family, and staff safety while we maximize the educational opportunities for our students.
We entered this year facing great uncertainty together by prioritizing safety and focusing on delivering an outstanding education for our students to the limits of our ability. We have worked through the challenges and opportunities presented by evolving science and changing guidance. We will continue to proceed in this manner. I intend to conclude our opportunity analysis, to include a careful study of the logistical challenges presented by a shift to more in-person instruction by the middle of next week, and I will then schedule community forums to communicate any changes to our plan. You will also be presented with a survey to gauge the interests of Hybrid Families in increasing to 4 days per week at 3 feet of Social Distancing and the interest of Remote Only Families in attending In-person for the remainder of the year. Your prompt response to the survey will greatly assist us in our planning.
We have worked together as a school district and as a community to educate the children of Queen Bee during some challenging and frustrating circumstances, and I am sure that the spirit of cooperation and partnership will guide us through the final weeks of this school year. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s principal if you have any questions or reach out to me directly if your question requires my attention.
Thank you,
Joseph R. Williams Ed. D.

Sinceramente,
Joseph R. Williams Ed. D.
Superintendente
