Important Message From Queen Bee District 16
March 31, 2020
Dear Queen Bee 16 Families and Communities,
I hope that this message finds you healthy and safe. Earlier today, Governor Pritzker extended the Shelter In Place Order through April 30th, 2020. This means that our schools will not be open for in-person instruction until May 1st, 2020 at the earliest. This also means that Queen Bee 16 will continue to deliver daily instruction to our students and families in accordance with our Remote Learning Contingency Plan beginning again on April 6th, 2020.
I am extremely proud of how our teachers, students, administrators and families have risen to the challenges presented to us and I am confident that our continued cooperation and partnership will result in the best possible educational experience for all students this year. I was not surprised that the closure date was extended and I want to let you know that we have been preparing for this contingency as well.
Our teachers, instructional coaches and administrators have been working on expanding our use of Blackboard Classroom, Zoom, and other virtual classroom programs in anticipation of the need to introduce new content and concepts via Remote Instruction and we have been closely studying the levels of device and internet access for all of our students and families. At this moment we are finalizing a plan to ensure 100% digital access for our students and families in both Kindergarten and 1st Grade and we are planning two Remote Learning Training days for our teachers. Our goal is to use every available resource to support and facilitate the education of our students and we are exploring every opportunity to do so.
At present, 100% of our students in Grades 2 through 8 have a district issued Chromebook in addition to the student workbooks that have been issued to them. We have attempted to purchase Chromebooks for each student in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. They are difficult to acquire as they are being purchased in bulk by some of the largest cities in our country. We have been able to secure 150 additional devices and we will be working to ensure that each family with a 1st Grader has at least one device in their home to support student learning. I believe that we can accomplish this and that would leave us a modest number that we can issue to Kindergarten families who don’t have a personal computer at home. Our Tech Specialists will help families who want to connect to Google Classroom with their personal devices and this will help us to ensure that every student has access from a district issued or a personal device.
Our teachers will need some time to prepare for this extension of Remote Learning and to become more familiar with some of the programs that will help them connect with their students and families in the best manner possible. This will require us to modify our schedule slightly by reserving April 9th and April 17th for Teacher Training. Your Principal and child’s teachers will
be sharing the details of our daily and weekly schedules with you as we go along, but I wanted to ensure that you knew that we will be providing support to our teachers on those days so that they are prepared to use all available resources to support our students.
You will be receiving more information from us over the next few days that will provide more details about our plans to ensure that all of our students are receiving the best possible education that we can provide. The spirit of cooperation and commitment to our students that have brought us this far will be enough to ensure that we meet this challenge successfully and emerge stronger than we were before. Please feel free to contact your principal, teacher or me directly if you have questions, concerns, or insights to share.
Thank you,
Joseph R. Williams, Ed. D.

Gracias,
Joseph R. Williams Ed. D.
